The PRINCE OF PERSIA Series Is Revived by Ubisoft as a VR

In an unexpected turn of events, Ubisoft has just announced a brand-new video game set in the beloved Prince of Persia universe — but fans of the Jordan Mechner–created franchise may want to cool their engines, as we're talking about a VR project.

Designed by Ubisoft Düsseldorf, the makers of two Assassin’s Creed VR escape rooms — Beyond Medusa’s Gate and Escape the Lost PyramidPrince of Persia: The Dagger of Time will debut in over 300 locations around the world at some point this spring, giving "teams of up to four players the chance to work together to solve puzzles and use the titular artifact’s powers to stop, rewind, or fast-forward time."

The newly revealed VR "escape game" takes place during the events of 2004's Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, with players being "summoned to the Fortress of Time by Kaileena to stop an evil Magi."

In case you're not familiar with the award-winning Prince of Persia trilogy, Kaileena is the Empress of Time responsible for the creation of the Hourglass of Time — the main source of the titular hero's problems.

According to Executive Producer for Ubisoft Escape Games Cyril Voiron, Ubisoft's VR escape rooms "are meant to be larger-than-life adventures; something you can’t do in the real world, something you can totally immerse yourself into once you put on the VR headset. Prince of Persia ticked all the boxes."

"The Sands of Time series seemed to be the perfect fit, because it not only offers a fantasy setting, but the original games also come with many elements that fit perfectly into VR, such as puzzles and, of course, using powers such as time control," Voiron explained.

Considering that the last major Prince of Persia game — The Forgotten Sands — was released in 2010 (and even that felt like a half-baked product rushed in production to capitalise on the [moderate] success of Disney's movie adaptation of The Sands of Time), the fact that the once-great series is still kept in the shadow of Assassin's Creed and turned into a VR experience probably will leave a sour taste in fans' mouth.
