SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Becomes the First Video Game Movie to Earn a Rare "A" CinemaScore
History is being made in front of our eyes, as Paramount Pictures' long-awaited Sonic the Hedgehog flick officially becomes the very first feature-length movie based on a video game series to earn a near-perfect "A" CinemaScore grade.
CinemaScore just updated its official website, revealing that Sonic the Hedgehog got the aforementioned "A" rating — just a notch below the highest accolade of A+ that a film can get from the aggregating.
The movie's "A" grade means that — according to the website — the audience generally enjoyed Sonic the Hedgehog more than other big-budget video game movies, such as Pokémon Detective Pikachu ("A-"), Warcraft ("B+"), Assassin's Creed ("B+"), Tomb Raider ("B") and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ("B").
While Sonic's CinemaScore indicates that the American audience had a great time watching the film, critics don't share the same enthusiasm, as the Jeff Fowler-directed adaptation of Sega's beloved game series is currently sitting at a rather mediocre 46/100 score on Metacritic and only 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Considering that the latest tracking for Sonic the Hedgehog suggests that the blue hero might actually beat the domestic box office haul of 2019’s Detective Pikachu ($144 million) in the long run, it's safe to say that Sonic will get a sequel down the line, becoming the first truly successful adaptation of a video game.
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now playing in theatres.
