RAINBOW SIX SIEGE Next-Gen Version Will Be Available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at Launch
Ubisoft has officially confirmed that the next-gen port of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege is in the works, as the French publisher is planning to release the acclaimed 2015 shooter for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as soon as they his stores.
"Why I can't give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles," Game Director Leroy Athanassoff revealed during this year's Six Invitational in Montreal. "What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it's up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch."
Although it will be a big step in Siege's evolution, it won't affect the game's current player base, as all Siege owners will be playing the same game — some of them will just enjoy several additional graphical enhancements. “What we want for this game is that we never, never, never split our community. We want to be on as [many] platforms as possible, and to have as much value as possible," he added.
Siege will also support cross-generation multiplayer between PS4 & PS5 and XBO & XSX — while Ubisoft is trying to bring cross-play to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but it depends on Microsoft and Sony's policies.
When it comes to cross-play between PC and consoles, it probably won't happen. "I don't think there will ever be console cross-play with PC. The only way we could do that kind of stuff is by letting you do that if you want to. By default, you're always with console. But if you want to match with these players, to have better matchmaking, or whatever, and get your ass kicked by a keyboard and mouse, up to you," Athanassoff concluded.
As a reminder, the next Siege DLC, titled Operation Void Edge, will introduce players to two new specialists.
The Siege is a brand-new style of gameplay embracing the reality of counter-terrorist operatives across the world: intense and asymmetrical close-quarters combat between attackers and defenders. As a defender, you will have the means to transform your environment into strongholds to prevent the attackers from breaching. As an attacker, you will have many planning options to face this challenge and defuse these situations.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via Steam, Origin, Uplay and the EGS); coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at a later date.
