THQ Nordic Will Establish a New Studio in Barcelona to Develop a Full Remake of 2001's GOTHIC
The Gothic series has never been hugely popular in the Americas, but Europe is a totally different story, with many fans of the role-playing classic from Poland and Germany eagerly awaiting any news on the future of the once-great franchise.
While the original trilogy was brought to life by Piranha Bytes, the fourth game, Arcania: Gothic 4, was developed at Spellbound Entertainment and published by Nordic Games. Unlike the first two instalments, Arcania was released to generally mixed reviews, with Piranha focusing on the Gothic-like Risen at the time.
None other than THQ Nordic — formerly Nordic Games — announced in 2019 that the company had purchased Piranha Bytes, showing an intention to revive Gothic one day with the help of its original creators.
After releasing a successful playable teaser for the Gothic remake, THQ Nordic recently officially confirmed that the reimagined version of the classic is on the way — but it won't be developed at Piranha Bytes.
"THQ Nordic will establish a new studio based in Barcelona, Spain, and will then assess what players liked and what they want to be different than in the playable teaser," the company announced. "One of the most common mentions was for example the demand for a grittier and less colourful world."
"We are up for the challenge to develop a full Gothic Remake which will stay as faithfully as possible to the original experience and transport the atmospheric world of Gothic into a high quality look and carefully modernizing certain gameplay mechanics," said Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic.
Considering that more than 180,000 players have checked out the playable teaser on Steam so far, it's clear that the fanbase is ready to support the remake. The title will be available for PC and next-gen consoles in the more distant future, as the full-blown remake will go into production on an unspecified date.
