Despite Coronavirus Outbreak, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Passes DETECTIVE PIKACHU at Domestic Box Office

Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog has officially passed the $144 million domestic gross of last year's Pokémon Detective Pikachu, becoming the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.

The Jeff Fowler–directed Sonic the Hedgehog has only been out for 5 weeks in the US and Canada, but it has already managed to outgross not only Detective Pikachu, but also Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Rampage, Mortal Kombat, Need for Speed, and every single Resident Evil and Tomb Raider movie ever made.

Unfortunately, it's clear that COVID-19 has successfully weakened Sonic's (otherwise stellar) box-office legs.

Considering that Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Denmark and Greece recently decided to shut down their movie theatres, it's safe to say that racing past Pikachu was one of the last box-office achievements of Sonic.

With the domestic total of $145,806,328, Sonic the Hedgehog still is quite a pleasant surprise, even if it will fall short of Pikachu's worldwide haul of $433 million. To claim the title of the biggest movie based on a video game in history, Sonic would still need to make well over $120 million globally, which seems unlikely.

While the global situation is grim, Sonic may find a second life on streaming services. As potential audiences look for things to do as they self-quarantine, watching the fan-favourite flick would surely be a no-brainer.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog is now playing in theatres.
