Sony's Mark Cerny Discusses PS5 Core Features; Next-Gen Console Is Backwards Compatible With PS4

As promised yesterday, Sony has just revealed the first concrete details on the long-awaited PlayStation 4 successor, and it looks like the Japanese company's next-gen machine and Microsoft's Xbox Series X will be two totally different beasts.

During the special presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, lead system architect for PS5, we've learned a whole lot more about the hardware system’s architecture and how the team at Sony and AMD designed PS5 to "benefit developers and the games they create." 

Although some fans have responded negatively to the 52-minute presentation, it was supposed to shed light on the technology powering the next-gen games, not the games themselves — and it did exactly that.

"Today we’re proud to unveil more details behind the technical and hardware components that make PlayStation 5 such an innovative and powerful platform – the ultra-high-speed SSD, integrated custom I/O system, custom AMD GPU with ray tracing, and highly immersive 3D audio," SVP Hideaki Nishino said on the PlayStation Blog. "With these capabilities, PS5 will allow developers to maximize their creativity, building expansive worlds and new play experiences in the games they design."

According to Cerny, PlayStation 5 will support nearly all of the top PS4 games (ranked by playtime) at launch via backwards compatibility. It's not clear if video games from the PS1-PS3 era will also be playable on PS5.
