Long-Delayed Sequel to DEAD ISLAND Is a Cross-Gen Video Game, a New Job Listing Reveals
According to a new job listing at Dambuster Studios (Homefront: The Revolution), the long-delayed sequel to Techland's Dead Island will be a cross-gen production, coming to both current- and next-gen consoles at some point in the future. Considering that neither THQ Nordic (publisher Deep Silver's parent company) nor Dambuster has released a single concrete detail on the title since May 2019, this news is hardly surprising.
Quite interestingly, Dambuster is currently searching for an art director who will help the Nottingham-based game developer "create the sun soaked backdrop to a full scale zombie apocalypse set across the iconic Californian city for the next instalment in the world renowned Dead Island franchise."
"This is a fantastic opportunity for you to further your career by leading the art direction on a ground-breaking title for current and future platforms at a [...] progressive and forward thinking studio," the job listing says, suggesting that Dead Island 2 is headed to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
In you're not familiar with the drama surrounding Dead Island 2, the open-world title was being developed by four different studios at various points over the past decade. Initially, the game was made at Techland, but the Polish studio ultimately abandoned the promising sequel to focus on its original IP, Dying Light.
After Techland's departure, Yager Development (Spec Ops: The Line) was the next studio tasked with creating the title. Unfortunately, due to creative differences, Yager parted ways with Deep Silver in 2015.
In March 2016, the publisher announced that Sumo Digital (Crackdown 3) would be taking over development on Dead Island 2, but as you've probably already guessed, that partnership has also ended, with Dambuster now trying to somehow finish the works on the long-delayed zombie production.
Both PS5 and XSX will be released this holiday season, so chances are that Dead Island 2 will step into the spotlight sooner rather than later. For the time being, let's just hope it's not another Duke Nukem Forever.
