One year after the massive blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral, it's still not clear when the most visited monument in Paris will reopen, and it's safe to say that the worldwide coronavirus pandemic doesn't make the restoration process any easier. Thankfully, the team at Ubisoft is working on a VR experience that will allow players to marvel at the 800-year-old cathedral's beauty from the comfort of their homes.
Although Ubisoft has not revealed any details on said title's release date, the studio recently shared online a new teaser for its VR production. What's even better, you don't even need a special headset to appreciate the virtual recreation of the cathedral, based on the Notre-Dame model from 2014's Assassin’s Creed: Unity.
The short trailer gives viewers the chance to explore a few scenes in 360 degrees and even take a ride in a hot air balloon — for free. Quite interestingly, the project — at least its preview — made its debut back in September 2019, when Ubisoft showcased the working prototype at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
As a reminder, Ubisoft was one of the first major companies that have pledged money towards the costly reconstruction, donating €500,000. "When we created Assassin's Creed Unity, we developed an even closer connection with this incredible city and its landmarks – one of the most notable elements of the game was the extraordinary recreation of Notre-Dame," Ubisoft explained back in April 2019, announcing the AC: Unity giveaway. "Video games can enable us to explore places in ways we never could have otherwise imagined. We hope, with this small gesture, we can provide everyone an opportunity to appreciate our virtual homage to this monumental piece of architecture."
With the world at a standstill because of COVID-19, take a moment to appreciate the timeless beauty of one of the oldest — and most significant — monuments on the face of Planet Earth with the video down below:
