After almost four long years of waiting — The Last of Us Part II was announced at the PlayStation Experience showcase in December 2016 — the long-awaited sequel to one the highest-rated games of the last decade is finally launching today. As a friendly reminder, The Last of Us Part II is a PlayStation 4–exclusive project.
Directed by Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End) and created by the team at Naughty Dog — the original creators of the Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter series — The Last of Us Part II is one of the best-reviewed PS4 production ever made, currently sitting at a near-perfect 95% score on Metacritic.
Although the vast majority of critics clearly couldn't be happier with how The Last of Us Part II turned out, there's a vocal group of players who do not share the same — almost universally positive — enthusiasm.
At the time of this writing, The Last of Us Part II is being review-bombed on every single review aggregator by an army of disappointed fans of the original and its main protagonists, Joel and Ellie. As a result of their efforts, the title's user score on Metacritic is reaching new lows: a 3.4/10 score based on over 10,000 ratings.
There's no denying that The Last of Us Part II is a highly divisive sequel, with some — perhaps a bit oblivious — critics calling it the Schindler's List of gaming (!), while many players are visibly angered (and confused) by Druckmann's controversial story choices and obvious attempt at subverting expectations like Rian Johnson.
The Last of Us Part II may not be the game fans have been waiting for, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't give it a fair chance. The title is out now, so take a look at its short launch trailer down below:
Five years after their dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming. Living amongst a thriving community of survivors has allowed them peace and stability, despite the constant threat of the infected and other, more desperate survivors.
The Last of Us Part II is currently available for PlayStation 4.
