Hangar 13 Explains How MAFIA: DEFINITIVE EDITION Will Expand on the Original Classic

Unlike Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a top-to-bottom remake, featuring not only a complete graphical overhaul, but also all-new game mechanics and story beats.

In a recent interview with USGamer, Hangar 13 president and chief creative officer Haden Blackman revealed some new details on the ambitious project's genesis and different ways it will expand on the classic original.

According to Blackman, Hangar 13 started developing Mafia: Definitive Edition shortly after the threequel made its debut in October 2016. "The idea of the Definitive Edition came up probably about six months after we wrapped Mafia 3, maybe a little bit longer than that," he said. "It was probably three months after our last DLC was done that we started talking about it in earnest, but that was a really small team for a long time. It's only been in the last year, year and a half, that we've been really working on it with a full production team, because we wanted to make sure we had everything laid out correctly."

When it comes to all-new content, the studio's overall goal is making sure that Tommy Angelo's dramatic rise and fall feels like a modern, fully fledged story, even though it is based on a game that was released eighteen years ago. "For example, Sarah, the love interest in the original, she doesn't get very much screen time, but she's the heart of why Tommy Angelo is doing what he's doing," Blackman explained. "At the beginning of the game you learn that he's trying to arrange a way out of the life and he's doing it all for his family, so we wanted to make sure that as a player you knew what it was that he was trying to protect. We wanted to make sure that Sarah got more screen time; she's in the game more, has an understandable kind of role in the lowercase family and uppercase Family."

Just like the controversial third instalment, Mafia: Definitive Edition will utilise similar cover mechanics to those in the long-running Gears of War series. To make the sandbox more accessible to new players, the upcoming remake will reportedly introduce basic difficulty options and flexible settings for police presence.

With Mafia: Definitive Edition hitting stores on the 28th of August, we will definitely learn a whole lot more about the remake in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a closer look at its latest trailer down below:

Re-made from the ground up, rise through the ranks of the Mafia during the Prohibition era of organized crime. After a run-in with the mob, cab driver Tommy Angelo is thrust into a deadly underworld. Initially uneasy about falling in with the Salieri crime family, Tommy soon finds that the rewards are too big to ignore.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (via Steam and EGS) on August 28.
