Bloober Explains Why THE MEDIUM Is Next-Gen Title and How It Differs From LAYERS OF FEAR & OBSERVER

Unlike Layers of Fear and Observer, Bloober Team's next title — The Medium — is played from a third-person perspective, but it isn't the only major difference between the studio's previous works and the new horror.

According to Bloober, The Medium is their biggest project to date, allowing players to explore a ruined hotel in Cracow. Although it doesn't sound like a groundbreaking concept, the fact that the main protagonist has access to an alternate reality — influenced by Beksiński's paintings — makes things a lot more interesting.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Lead Game Designer Wojciech Piejko and CMO Tomasz Gawlikowski revealed some new details on the unsettling world and unique gameplay mechanics of the long-awaited horror. "The Medium is completely different from Layers of Fear and Observer," Piejko explained. "We aren't using the same tricks. I think The Medium will be a completely different game from Layers of Fear, Observer, and Blair Witch – especially because of the switch of the perspective to third person."

To make The Medium more cinematic, Bloober has decided to take a page out of Until Dawn's book and use Resident Evil-like fixed camera angles. "We're able to pull different emotional strings for the player than from the first-person perspective," Piejko added. "Of course, it's easier to scare people who are playing a first-person game, because they think that everything is jumping on them. But with the third-person, you can have a bigger emotional palette that you can pull from the players, because you can see the character, her face, her eyes, her emotions. It completely changes our approach to the game."

Unfortunately for PlayStation fans, The Medium is coming to Xbox Series X and PC — and it definitely won't change anytime soon, as Producer Jacek Zięba has reassured the Xbox Wire team that the studio is not working on a PS5 port of the Silent Hill-like production. "Thanks to the power of Xbox Series X, we can develop the game the way we have always envisioned it," he said. "I’m not talking only about graphics, although certainly it helps create an immersive [...] atmosphere, but also about gameplay."

Considering that The Medium will make its debut later this year, Bloober will definitely share more details on the title in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a look at the game's announcement trailer down below:

Become a medium living in two worlds: the real and the spirit one. Haunted by a vision of a child’s murder, you travel to an abandoned hotel resort, which years ago became the stage of an unthinkable tragedy. There you begin your search for difficult answers. As a medium with access to both worlds, you have a wider perspective and can see more clearly that there’s no one simple truth to what others perceive. Nothing is what it seems, everything has an other side.

The Medium is coming to Xbox Series X and PC during this holiday season.
