Mortal Shell may have been officially announced on April Fool's Day, but developer Cold Symmetry's first major project is not a joke, as the brand-new masocore game's beta is now live on the Epic Games Store.
For those unfamiliar with Mortal Shell, the Souls-like game introduces at least one unique game mechanism — possessing souls. Unlike FromSoftware's greatest productions, Mortal Shell doesn't feature any traditional character classes, instead encouraging players to explore the grim, shattered world and learn more about the titular Shells — and shining a light on their past is the most effective way to level up your character.
According to London-based publisher Playstack, the game's beta build allows the player to possess "two Mortal Shells - Harros and Tiel - to better understand their subtleties in combat. This Beta does not include spoilers [...] and we have deliberately cordoned-off much of the open sprawling marshland of Fallgrim to keep you focused." Reportedly, NiOh and Bloodborne veterans will need an hour to complete it.
As a friendly reminder, Mortal Shell's PC version is a timed Epic Games Store exclusive. Although the long-awaited game will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC at some point this year — before the end of September, to be exact — the bad news is that its Steam edition will be released in Q3 2021 at the earliest.
Without further ado, take a look at some never-before-seen gameplay footage from Mortal Shell right now:

Awakening as an empty vessel, you will enter into a shattered and twisted world where the remains of humanity wither and rot. Implored to do the bidding of the mysterious “Dark Father”, you must traverse this tattered landscape and track down hidden sanctums of devout followers. There, in Mortal Shell’s most hallowed grounds, you must overcome formidable foes and harvest the sacred glands. You won’t be truly alone when the dead litter your path: Scattered across this land are the remnant anima of lost warriors who can be inhabited to gain their unique abilities and knowledge of weapons. The Dark Father is desperate for you to complete your task — but to what end?
Mortal Shell is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (via the EGS) in Q3 2020; will arrive on Steam in 2021.
