SHADOW WARRIOR 3 Will Ditch Excessive

Flying Wild Hog has revealed some new details on the third entry in the modern Shadow Warrior series — and fans of the 2013 reboot should be glad to hear that the threequel is going back to the franchise's roots.

That's right, Shadow Warrior 3 will ditch the Borderlands-esque "loot shooter" mechanics of the 2016 sequel.

In a recent interview with IGN, Lead Gameplay Designer Paweł Kowalewski confirmed that the upcoming FPS won't follow in the footsteps of the divisive sequel, officially abandoning its open-world structure and heavy emphasis on the "co-op" philosophy. Instead, Shadow Warrior 3 will try to channel the Duke Nukem–esque spirit of the fan-favourite 1997 original and be a much more streamlined single-player experience.

"When we were reviving the IP, there were certain ingredients that we needed in order to make it faithful to the original," Kowalewski said. "[But now], for Shadow Warrior 3, we wanted to go back to our roots and make a game that’s focused on a linear single player campaign that’s filled with over-the-top action from the opening credits." Considering that many players have failed to fall in love with Shadow Warrior 2, the fact that the newly announced FPS — powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 — won't try to reinvent the wheel is definitely good news for longtime fans of the action-packed franchise.

While we're patiently waiting for more information about the core systems of Shadow Warrior 3, be sure to take a look at nearly 4 minutes of never-before-seen — and pretty gory — gameplay footage down below:

Fallen corporate shogun Lo Wang and his former employer turned nemesis turned sidekick Orochi Zilla embark on an improbable mission to recapture an ancient dragon they unwillingly unleashed from its eternal prison. Armed with a punishing mix of blades and bullets, Lo Wang must traverse uncharted parts of the world to track down the dark beast and push the apocalypse back yet again.

Shadow Warrior 3 is coming to PC (via Steam) in 2021.
