SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Will Race Into Chinese Theaters Five Months After Its Initial Debut
After a recent failed attempt at re-opening theaters amid the ongoing pandemic, the Chinese government is officially lifting several COVID-19–related restrictions once again, allowing audiences to watch various older films on the silver screen for the first time. Jeff Fowler’s hit Sonic the Hedgehog will be one of those movies.
According to Variety, Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog will race into Chinese theaters on July 31 — nearly six months after its initial worldwide debut, as the movie was released in the US on February 14.
As a reminder, the beloved video game movie was supposed to arrive in theaters in China on February 28.
Quite surprisingly, Sonic the Hedgehog will compete for audience attention with Disney's Big Hero 6 and Mr. Miao, a brand-new local animated flick. Considering that the film has been available on digital platforms for a good while now — and piracy is more popular than ever — it's safe to say that the action-packed movie won't break and records — and its current box-office haul of $306 million will remain pretty much the same.
Thanks to the movie's excellent performance at the domestic box office, Director Jeff Fowler, Writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller, and Executive Producers Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller are already working on a full-blown sequel that will be focused on the relationship between the blue hero and Tails.
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now available on digital platforms, Blu-ray, and Ultra 4K HD.
