Jonathan Blow Reveals BRAID, ANNIVERSARY EDITION Featuring Remastered Visuals and New Commentary
Jonathan Blow — award-winning creator of 2008's Braid and 2016's The Witness — has finally announced his next big project, a remaster of his acclaimed puzzle-platformer where you can manipulate the flow of time.
Game developer Thekla's newly announced Braid, Anniversary Edition will arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux) in the first quarter of 2021.
Considering that Braid made its debut a long time ago, it shouldn't be surprising that its hand-drawn visuals don't look great in 4K (or 5K [or even 8K if you're posh enough]). To allow fans enjoy the title the way it was meant to be played, artist David Hellman will "repaint the whole game at much higher levels of detail."
Those who would like to enjoy Braid is all its 2008 glory should be happy to hear that they will be able to toggle between the original and its all-new remaster. Furthermore, Braid, Anniversary Edition will feature a developer commentary, as Blow wants to go "much deeper into the subject matter than developers usually do; I want to say stuff that really gets to the heart of why things are the way they are, rather than just saying some surface stuff for the sake of doing commentary, as often happens. I want to cover all subjects involved in the game -- art, programming, game design, [...] history of independent games, whatever else -- and if you want a high-level, short explanation, you can get that, but if you want a 20-minute-long explanation of why a particular puzzle is the way it is, you can get that too."
