Bethesda Is the Most Recent Addition to the Ever-Expanding Xbox Game Studios Family
The console war changes, as Microsoft has announced that it's planning to acquire ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks, one of the biggest and most prolific video game publishers in the world.
Microsoft is hoping to finalise the deal — worth $7.5 billion — sometime between January and June of 2021.
"Just as they took the bold first steps to bring The Elder Scrolls franchise to the original Xbox, Bethesda were early supporters of Xbox Game Pass, bringing their games to new audiences across devices and have been actively investing in new gaming technology like cloud streaming of games," Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said. "We will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. One of the things that has me most excited is seeing the roadmap with Bethesda’s future games, some announced and many unannounced, to Xbox console and PC including Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios."

"All of their great work will of course continue and grow and we look forward to empowering them with the resources and support of Microsoft to scale their creative visions to more players in new ways for you."
Following Microsoft's — literally game-changing — acquisition of Bethesda, the Redmond-based tech giant will become the owner of these award-winning studios: Bethesda Softworks — Bethesda's publishing arm — Bethesda Game Studios (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4), id Software (Rage, Doom Eternal), ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76), Arkane (Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Dishonored 2), MachineGames (Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus), Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo), Alpha Dog (Wraithborne, MonstroCity: Rampage), and finally Roundhouse Studios, a relatively young studio established by ex-Human Head Studios (2006's Prey, The Quiet Man) developers.
Quite interestingly, Tango Gameworks and Arkane are still working on two timed PS5 exclusives (Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo), which means that Microsoft will indirectly help Sony promote their next-gen console.
Although it's good to know that Microsoft is willing to pay big bucks to make Xbox Series X, Series S, and PC everyone's favourite gaming systems, the fact that new Dishonored, Doom, Evil Within, Elder Scrolls, Quake, Wolfenstein, Fallout, Rage, and Prey sequels probably won't be available on Sony, Nintendo, and Google's platforms is nothing to be happy about. Plus, the last thing the evolving industry needs is getting Disneyfied.
