Combat System in I, THE INQUISITOR Is Inspired by Rocksteady's BATMAN: ARKHAM Trilogy

The team at The Dust has finally shared some new details about I, the Inquisitor, the Polish game developer and publisher's most ambitious project to date based on the popular book series created by Jacek Piekara.

During a recent interview with PolskiGamedev, Producer Kuba Karólewski confirmed that the project follows the story of Mordimer Madderdin, the main (anti-)hero of Piekara's best-selling books. Although The Dust's take on I, the Inquisitor won't shy away from some of the darker aspects of the character and his profession, the production won't be as violent and gruesome as the original, allowing fans of Detroit: Become Human–like titles enjoy I, the Inquisitor without feeling like they're watching Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.

Speaking of Christ, I, the Inquisitor is set in an alternate reality where the Son of God rejects his destiny and decides to punish those who had tormented him instead of sacrificing his life for their sins. As Lord's right hand, Mordimer will embark on a dangerous journey — set in the Dark Ages — to bring order to chaos in the name of God. During his (un)holy quest, the unlikely hero will get the chance to freely explore a ruined medieval time, and it sounds like the game's progression system is directly inspired by 2013's Tomb Raider.

Although Mordimer will learn new skills during the course of the game, The Dust is clearly trying to create a full-blown Metroidvania experience, which means that players won't be able to access some locations from the get-go. Thankfully, the town's citizens will be more than happy to make your journey a little bit easier by giving you new tools — including a grappling hook — but you will have to be willing to help them out first.

When it comes to the combat system in I, the Inquisitor, the developer is taking a page out of Rocksteady's book, as you will have to get used to its Batman: Arkham City–like game mechanics to make the most of it.

Obviously, if you're a big fan of mindless button mashing, I, the Inquisitor should also be right up your alley.

Considering that Mordimer is an inquisitor, it shouldn't be surprising that the cross-gen project will feature plenty of occasions to interrogate various poor souls accused of heresy and other crimes. Fortunately, those who absolutely hated that scene in Grand Theft Auto V won't be forced to torture anyone, as having a nice talk will often be much more productive than using brute force to (sometimes literally) break their subjects.

Taking into account that I, the Inquisitor is still years away — as the 20-hour adventure will hit stores at some point in 2022 — it may be a good while before the publisher releases the first trailer for their opus magnum.
