Eagle-eyed fans have spotted a new Easter Egg in the recently released SpellForce 3: Fallen God, as a special in-game item found in the stand-alone expansion confirms that a remake of TimeSplitters 2 is in the works.
The item's description reads as follows (via VGC): "It’s finally coming! The iconic shooter, which has stood the test of time to join the era of modern games." It's an usual way to reveal a game, but at least we now know for sure that THQ Nordic's TimeSplitters 2: Remake will step into the spotlight sooner rather than later.
The first-person shooter originally arrived on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube in 2002. In the game, you assume the role of 2 brave space marines who have to find a way to stop an alien race before they ruin our timeline.
While remaking TimeSplitters 2 before its predecessor may seem quite bizarre at first glance, the sequel has gained something of a cult following over the years and remains the best-reviewed TimeSplitters out there.
Considering that THQ Nordic has expressed interest in creating a new entry in the TimeSplitters series on multiple occasions — and it's worth remembering that the Austrian company acquired the rights to the IP over two years ago — it's safe to say that the studio will finally showcase the new game in the near future.
Although THQ Nordic has not shared any details about the long-awaited remake yet, there's a chance that the title — and it's just pure speculation on our part — is being developed by Black Forest Games, the team that recently worked on the remaster of Titan Quast and the remake of Destroy all Humans for the publisher.
UPDATE - Eurogamer has reached out to THQ Nordic about TimeSplitters 2: Remake, and it turns out that the item's description was "just an innocent Easter Egg." According to a THQ Nordic spokesperson, the vendor in SpellForce 3: Fallen God is "known especially for not telling the truth." We'll get 'em next time.
